Recent Monotypes by Patricia Sennott

Here are two recent monotypes, actually quick sketches in ink on plexiglas. After the image is made, damp heavy paper is placed on top and it all gets squeezed through the roller of an etching press, which transfers the image to the paper.

Back from the Burn - Allison

Over the last couple of years, I kept hearing "go to burning man" from a lot of folks I know, so I went this year and WOW. What an experience. Now friends are asking "will you go back?" and it's a definite YES.
I made some masks for burning man the month before I went out there. They were fun to have out there! Cardboard, masking tape, hot glue, faux fur, styrafoam balls, acrylic paint, etc... They held up really well and all of them are wearable with decent visibility. They are going to go to the ink peoples mask show in a few weeks.

StewART Chained

Next Monday the building that houses StewART Studios will welcome the Arcata Campus of College of the Redwoods. Today management installed this yellow plastic chain to guide the young scholars down the path of higher education, and away from the path of nudity and free-thinking. The question is... will it work? Do we even want it to work? And what about the UPS guy, will the chain stop him too?

Steven's Zoetrope

Beyond the neatly stacked and labeled rubber stamps on sale, visitors to the MEER IMAGE studio check out my recently built zoetrope, a primitive animation device. The most common reaction to it is "whoa... that's amazing!"

And some recent work...

Steven Vander Meer, life drawing

A fountain pen drawing from last night's life drawing circle. Usually I draw in pencil, but now and then to shake things up I'll use pen. The figure was done during a ten minute pose. Then the other items were added during the next ten mintue pose which I did not draw. Had I waited until after the drawing session was over to finish this drawing, it probably never would have happened.

Allison Reed - Ten years of sketchbooks

I always try to keep a sketchbook going in the background of my life. When I picked up the habit in high school, I used sketchbooks to alleviate boredom, and I found it interesting to see my drawings progressing in chronological order. Sometimes I'd use them as a form of escapism in awkward social situations, to experiment with some new painting technique, or to remember something beautiful I saw. I started my first sketchbook in 1999 when I was a freshman in high school and filled 17 of them by the time I graduated in 2003. I think I am on number 30 now.
Here is a peek into what I have been up to in them since I never show these at galleries or anything: A set of my sketchbook drawings on flickr...

Flowers With Long Stems monoprint by Libby

Here is another monoprint of flowers that have long stems with a blossom at the top. I put them in a narrow tall vase. It reminds me of two people having to share and maybe they get along and maybe they don't.

Libby George~ Blue Flowers monoprint

After putting away my etching press for several years, I am printmaking again! I always loved printmaking but stopped because the traditional printmaking process required very toxic materials, (asphaltum, acetone, etc).

Last year I received a grant from the Ingrid Nickelsen Trust to explore printmaking with non-toxic soy inks. This monoprint is a result.

Painting on Plexiglas, laying a piece of damp paper over the Plexiglas, and running it through the press makes the monoprint. For the collage work, shiny paper is glued with rice paste and then run through the press a second time.

North Coast Open Studios Ad

This ad will appear in the 2009 North Coast Open Studios Guide Book. We all got together one day for the photo shoot, intending for it to be outdoors, but it was raining. So, we jammed into the hallway which is also our art gallery. Nobody was unsurprised that the photo didn't show anybody in an undesirable way. We shot the photo with a Canon G10 on a tripod using the self-timer. Ad layout by me.

Lion by Allison

LION, 12x24", acrylic and collage on redwood, SOLD.
Here is something I did a few months ago and recently shipped out. My neighbor gave me a bunch of nice recycled redwood boards to work on so I have been slowly using them up.

WELCOME TO THE STEWART STUDIOS BLOG!
